our {love} story

A little over 10 years ago I was talked into going to a party with my friend, Katie La.
I was tired and sad over a silly break-up and the last thing I wanted to do was "party".

We ended up at Mark's mom's barber shop (Mark is Wendy's husband) where a few guys were playing poker... maybe dominoes, I can't remember, but it was far from a party.

I sat by myself, doodling with my glitter pens, and not really talking to anyone.

I was miserable and ready to go home when a forever-long blue Cadillac pulled up.
The guy driving was talking to some of the other guys but had not spoke to me, nor had I paid him much attention either- other than noticing that he had a strong "Boyd accent".

A cop came barreling by, lights and sirens on and I muttered, "hmm... wonder what's going on?" In which the guy in the car responded with an off-colored comment about a local officer-- who happened to be my dad.
Before I could rebuttal, Lance was already laughing and giving me a wink.
He knew who I was.

At the time, I was flattered.
I didn't know him from the man in the moon... but he knew me?  And my family tree?
What a compliment!

Now-- in hind sight-- it wasn't a compliment at all.
Lance's mind is like a Rolodex-- constantly cataloging and pulling out random information that he has pocketed at some point or another, to drop your jaw or bring light to a conversation.
That's how he rolls.

Back inside, I went back to coloring.
Lance came and sat beside me, and asked if I always brought gel pens to parties... and then started doodling with me.
He made me laugh the whole night, by making fun of me-- but I did my best to not give him credit for my smiles.
He dressed so preppy and put together-- but wore cowboy boots with his khakis.
He was so funny...
And at this point, I didn't know if I would even talk to him again.
But I laughed my butt off for a few hours and secretly didn't want to leave.
That was the night I met Lance.

Over the next few months, I kept him on my radar.
[Mostly by using Mark as my GPS.]

I would call and chat with him from time to time and I did my best to show up where I thought he would be.  [his girlfriend would typically impede my stalking plans--with a date our something and rarely he'd show up]

Come December, I heard that he and his girlfriend [now our neighbor] had broke up and I did what any stalker would do...
I showed up at his house with the movie Blow and asked if he was busy.

He made me laugh so hard every time I was around him, and I craved seeing him again and again...
I loved his 'accent' but I wasn't sure if I wanted to date him or if I would get another Zane.  (the love of my life at this point, my best friend-- whom I would never date, for the same reason I wouldn't date Amanda or Wendy-- it would just be weird.)

January rolled around and my brother was throwing a huge party at his house for his best friend's 21st birthday.

One of Lance's best friends from HS, Luke, happened to be my cousin.
[Well, that's a lie-- we were family for a minute, through marriage, but we always just called ourselves that because it was easiest!]
I used Luke and Kaleb, occasionally to get dirt on Lance...
What are fake-cousins for?!
This time, I invited them [him] to the party.
He came.

I had a lot to drink that night...
and Lance was worried about me.

So worried, in fact-- that he drove home and then turned around and came back to check on me because I was not in good shape when he left.
He kissed my drunken face that night, for the first time-- and made sure I was put away and safe before he left.
[I hated that I wasted our first kiss that way.]

By Valentine's Day, we had seen each other or spoke daily for a few weeks....  off and on for months.
I kind of knew-- this would be the determining factor.
If we made plans for Valentines Day, he thought more of me than a friend.
But if we didn't acknowledge the calendar-- he would be another Zane. (and I guess I was good with that too)

Lunch rolled around and I got a call from Lance.
He wanted to know if I had plans for dinner.
I, in awkward Holly fashion, responded with, "Oh, thank you but I'm not hungry"
In which he reminded me that I might be in another 6 or 7 hours...
Apparently he was right...
On Valentine's day, we had  Our first date.

Lance drove a jeep back then and it was freezing outside, so he took me in his dad's ridiculous Caddy.
After eating, we made it back to a destroyed car.
Someone had broke into the Cadillac, stolen his new coat and wrecked the inside of the car.
Like an idiot, I asked if we had left the car that way!  Lance was mad but he was so calm.

I realized that night, that Lance was not like anyone I had ever dated...
Honestly, not like many men I knew at all.
He was so mild, and calm, and funny.
He was not egotistical at all, nor rude to me.
He was so easy to talk to and be around.
Because of that... I still struggled with the idea of dating him.
The guys in my life who treated me well, ended up being my best friends...
Lance treated me like Josh and Zane.
So it was confusing to me... how could we make this best friend thing work into a relationship?

On February 22, we officially became a couple.
Though I wasn't sure how the logistics would all work out, I was absolutely sure that I didn't him to date anyone else.
Nor did I want to keep coming over and 'making out' with him, if I wasn't his number one girl! ;)

From that point forward, we were together every single day.
Literally.
[other than the cruise I took right after I graduated HS, Lance and I have not been more than 2 days without seeing each other.]

Lance has never put me high on a pedestal... or gushed about how great I make his life... we didn't have to 'defy the odds' to stay together.... no glitter... no fairy tale... we just aren't that passionate couple that I envisioned for my life.
We just were.
Easy.
Best friends.

February 22, 2004 he had big plans for our anniversary.

He wanted to go to Fort Worth and celebrate with dinner, but I kept throwing curve balls his way.
I felt fat.
I had nothing to wear.
Couldn't we just stay in?
I was tired.

Against Lance's norm, he stayed persistent.  We were going.  Even if I wore sweat pants, he said.
I dressed and we made our way in.

We were picked up by a horse and carriage and Lance popped the question.
He was so nervous and he thought there would be much more room in that tiny carriage so he was not able to get on one knee.
I don't know that I even answered him... but I was so excited to get that ring on my finger, the answer was obvious.
The carriage dropped us off Del Friscos and we ate dinner and then headed home.

I was just 19 years old (a few months from 20) and in nursing school... and though I was excited to flaunt my new diamond, I was in no hurry to get hitched.

I finished school, got a job, and even got an apartment with Lance but tying the knot still terrified me.

Lance would get very frustrated and to pacify him, I would set a date.
The day would come and the day would go.
Three times to be exact.

I broke off our engagement once...
but got back together a month later.
Not because I realized I was ready for marriage, but I knew I was the only person who could make my best friend stop hurting.

I did not have cold feet... my feet were in ice water.
Frozen.
I told Lance, "it is not you... it is forever.  I hate to commit myself to something as permanent as that."
Lance would lighten the mood by saying, "forever?!  I was only signing a 5 year contract.  We can re-evaluate then."
Though kidding... I wondered if there was a way to make that legit.
It would surely calm my fears!

Our first year living together was rough, to say the least.
I feared failure so bad for us that I would create my own demise.
Lance would say, "I am not going to leave just to make this easy on you... I love you and if you want out, you are going to have to make the tough move yourself."
I think I needed him to prove to me that he would stay.  {through thick in thin.}
And he did.

One day, while sitting at work, it hit me.
I want to be a mom.
I want Lance to be their dad...
I love Lance.
He is my best friend...
what is the big deal?

Forever?... 5 years?... surely I can do this.

So I did.
I set another date.
The final date.

December 2, 2006; We said 'I do'.
I had dreamed about a wedding full of pink, yellow, lime green and deep purple.
Or fall colors, since it is my favorite time of the year.
But once I had made up my mind... we took what we found available.

We had a Christmas wedding.

Lance surprised me,
by having my original engagement ring morphed into the vintage looking ring it is today.
It was designed for me, and no one else in the world has the same ring.
I love it.

For our reception, we rented a live band.
The Hawkes surprised us both by learning our first dance song, that we intended to play by CD before they began playing.  They rented a xylophone and everything... It was perfect.

Our reception was amazing.  And though there was some crazy-drinking... there was some crazy-dancing... awesome memories... and I think our wedding, overall, was perfect.

It surely doesn't feel like that night was five years ago...
sometimes it feels like yesterday-- other times it feels like a thousand years ago.

We have bought a house...
a few cars...
had 2 boys...
experienced very hard times...
grew in love...
lived life.
We have stood at the top of some glorious mountains...
And threatened to bail all together.

But in the end...
Lance and I have a great marriage, because it all began as a solid friendship.

It surely isn't glitter-- but I guarantee it is beautiful.
I get to share my every breath, every worry, every laugh, and every memory with my best friend in the world.
So here's to signing our next contract.

{Happy 5 year anniversary to my best friend, and the absolute best daddy this world has.}

"I love my daddy..."

Lance,
There is not one thing I would change about you as a daddy...

You've held our babies sick,
been peed on, pooped on,
changed a jillion diapers...
missed a million hours of sleep...
And encouraged me through the hardest days of parenting.

You have cried a thousand tears...
laughed a zillion laughs...
and showed our boys how to respect and be a husband one day.

You are patient, encouraging, silly, loving...
Goofy, young-spirited, honest and committed.

You understand that the days are long but the years are short;
therefor you savor every joy that parenthood offers.

Like me, you are scared to death of this big of a love.
But unlike me, you are faithful and don't bask in the fears.

You instill values and manners in our boys,
and know that discipline equates to love.

You don't believe there has ever been enough play...
or sports watched...
or jokes played...
hugs given...
kisses stolen...
or "I love you"s said.

Every day that I think you couldn't be any better at this daddy thing...
you prove me wrong again.

You are one of a kind, Lance.
And you are adored.

Of all of the millions of mistakes I have made in my life,
choosing you to be my co-parent was not one of them.

You are our rock,
And you are a mold for a dad.

I know that is all the absolute truth,
because the four little baby eyes that look up to you and worship your existence...
prove me right again and again.

Thanks for being you...
(even when you drives me crazy!)

Happy Father's Day, to the best daddy I know.
Love,
Holly.

29 reasons I love Lance.

Today Lance turns 29.
Next year he's the big THREE OH.
Though I can list a million reasons why I love him...
I'll give 29.
Happy birthday My Love.

1. I love how committed Lance is to me.  He is faithful and devoted.  He is family.  He is the greatest man I know and a mold for a husband.  Right or wrong, against anyone else, he is always on my side.  Always.

2. I love his sense of humor.  I tell him that he gets his best stuff from me ;) but Lance is funnier than I ever thought about being and occasionally he is hilarious.  He has a keen sense for timing and can be off-color and is often inappropriate but he always makes me smile.  He has saved us from many arguments with this attribute.

3.  Lance is unbelievably patient.  With Maddox, with me, and with most everyone else he comes in contact with.  I am definitely harder on myself than he is on me.

4. I love his eyes.  Big, brown, and almond shape.  Maddox has his eyes. Both gorgeous.

5. He is a dreamer.  I see the world like a coloring book, bold black and white lines.  Lance sees it like a watercolor painting.  He always has a big plans and bigger dreams.  He is always optimistic about the future, which is inspiring at times.

6. He has the best smell.  Not just his cologne... which smells oh-so-good too, but like his smell that God gave him.  The smell that I get every time I kiss him.
Which reminds me about his lips... they are big and soft and sweet.
And the freckle by his ear.  Another fave of mine.  But something that only I notice.

7. I love that he is affectionate... but not oogy.  He never neglects to tell me how much he loves me.  And  kisses me a million times a day to remind me in case I forget.  He isn't a huge fan of PDA, but we still hold hands.

8. I love to watch Lance be a dad.  He plays with Maddox like he is his best friend. He is awesome with him and as important of a task as being a mom is to me, it is equally important to Lance to be a great dad.  Watching him hold Maddox the first time, tears in his eyes, overflowing with emotion is my favorite memory of my husband.  Etched into my mind like a painting, I hold it dear to my heart.

9. I love that Lance is still young at heart.  He plays trucks/ tractors and whiffle ball golf or T-ball with Maddox because HE loves it.  Late night games of pig on a Little Tyke's basketball goal and 20 minute conversations that started as "what if..." happen often in our house.  Dancing in our kitchen may start off as a romantic gesture... but usually ends in a breaking-it-down pretend competition for 'neighbor-girl' to "judge".  A year from 30, he is still 13 in his mind!

10. I love that he is laid back.  I wonder sometimes, how he can go through life with butterfly wings, but when it comes down to it, I'm glad he does. He is the yin to my yang and is calm when I am in the center of a storm.  Lance is always my constant.

11. I love the way he looks at me. Every look has a dictation and I have seen them all!  From pleased to the FAR opposite... from across the room- I can read him like a book.  We are always on the same page and have plenty of conversations without a word ever spoken.

12. I love that Lance is faithful.  He reads his bible and tries leads our family by God's word.  Lance turns to prayer and reminds me to do the same when I feel like I am lost.

13. I love to see him laugh.  A smile is good.  But when Lance Laughs, I can't help but laugh myself.  It is infectious.

14. He is a faithful fan to college sports.  He has a deep loyalty to the Texas Longhorns.  Embarrassing or not, we fly out UT flag every Saturday during college football season.  And during big games, he fights like hell to get to fly the car flags too.  (I do not allow this sort of rubbish!)  UT baseball and girls softball also tickle his fancy!  He roots for Tech when they aren't playing Texas and he loves nothing more than to tailgait at a TCU game. But at the end of the day, he still bleeds burnt orange.

15. I love that he is athletic.  He loves to play all sports and is at least decent at most that he tries.  He won $50 a couple of years ago for making 40 out of 50 3-pointers.  Because he is a big guy, people don't expect him to be as good as he is.  I think it may be his strategy!

16. And I love that he is a big guy.  I always feel secure and small in his arms.  I like that when I was pregnant, I didn't look like I ate him whole.

17. I love to be around him.  I have the most fun when we are together.  Date nights or just watching our DVR shows at home.  I am most comfortable and happiest when we are together.

18. Lance is understanding.  He rarely judges me, even when I lose my patience as a mom.  He takes over the situation and then assures me that I am a great mommy.

19. I love that he backs me in my decisions.  Even when it doesn't make any sense to the rest of the world...  Like with Maddox: splitting up vaccines, nursing him until he was 14 months old, refusal of daycare, and my other neurotic fears.  Lance listened me out and then defended our decisions.  We work as a team.

20. I love that he loves his new job.  He has definitely made more money in his past but has never been this happy in a career.  I enjoy watching him learn new things and go through schooling to become better and inch his way to his ultimate goal.

21. I love his hair.  He has gorgeous hair.  It is soft, slick, thick black hair.  It always smells so good too.

22. He has an awesome sense of style.  He can buy me an outfit and I do not worry at all if it will be cute.  He always looks nice and put together regardless what he is wearing.  He is so handsome.

23. He is honest, sincere, detail oriented, and precise.  I know that sounds like it should be a header on a resume, but it is true.

24. I love that he loves sports.  Weird to 'like' as a wife, but that is his niche.  I know it makes him happy to watch them, talk about them, play them, watch the recaps of them, watch old games, talk old games, go to games... throw sticks at a wall and pretend it is a game... you get the idea.  Sports make him happy and it makes me happy for him to be happy.  AND I love that he is okay that I am not a "sporty girl"... I'll watch them with him... I'll deck out in garb... I'll deck my kid out in garb... and I'll be his biggest fan when he's playing BUT I don't throw around names or stats or pretend to be athletic.  And he doesn't want me to.  I don't think I'd be as attractive to him if I did.

25. I love that he isn't scared to cry.  Though tears from Lance are rare, that doesn't mean we haven't talked until the wee hours of the morning, tears flowing about life, love, money, our future, faith and most of all our shared passion for Maddox.

26. He is easy going.  Lance is not jealous and is FAR from controlling.  He trusts me completely.  Because "without trust, we don't have a thing".

27. He has a never ending wish list.  Whether to add to his lists of things to collect: baseball hats, watches, guns, Starting Line Ups, shoes, baseball cards, under armour redic, GST hoop-la, ammo, or things he just simply NEEDS....  It is the song that never ends.  This list drives me NUTS most of the time.   But I am thankful that he is not as tight and frugal as I.  He believes, "You only live once."  I love that about him.

28. I love that Lance is ALWAYS prepared.  Some call it OCD, I think he prefers 'ready for anything'.  You could literally live out of his truck in a tsunami.  You can be guaranteed the alarm is set and the garage is shut before he leaves or goes to bed...  It is checked 64 times a day.

29. He is my best friend.  100%.  We had a really hard year, due to the economy and at times I wanted to bail out on it all.  But he never did. We laugh together, cry together, and always have each other's backs.  We share are deepest secrets, biggest fears, and have witnessed our greatest joys together.  We are like turtle doves... mated for life.  We are a dang good team.
